It's ultimately rather wearying, and there's an unresolved tension between the songs and the machine riffs, best summed up by "A Different Kind of Love Song", which is only different in that it resembles a proper song, but only superficially. THOUGH IT is hardly the most important consequence of the events of 11 September, one's heart does sink at the prospect of the inevitable tsunami of saccharine sentimentality being readied by the US entertainment industry. Motherland is the first album dedicated to the (American) victims, a noble enough effort which opens with the prescient "This House Is On Fire", whose apocalyptic lyric - all but warning of a jihad - is lent a further chill by the Arabic flavour of the strings and Erik Della Penna's elegant oud playing.
